Want To Speed Up Your Recovery? Get Rid Of All Your Artificial Dopamine Highs. Not Just Porn.

I cannot stress this enough. Don't sit around and binge watch Netflix and order pizza. Don't do that shit. Don't take a second glance at that picture of the girl in a short skirt in your sociology textbook. Don't pay attention to the close-up shots of cheerleaders during halftime of the Ravens game. Better yet, don't be watching the Ravens game. Give TV a break. Definitely don't be playing video games. Do NOT start making new accounts on dating websites. Don't be browsing Facebook. At that, deactivate your Facebook for a while, until you've reached 90 days. Think you can do it? MINIMIZE YOUR MINDLESS ACTIVITIES. Instead of sitting around reading reddit all day or watching youtube videos, go to the gym. Cook yourself something HEALTHY. Pick up that dusty guitar in the corner. Call your friend. Read a book. You get the idea. That burst of dopamine that you get from unhealthy activities, that's your enemy. Pornography is just one of its many outlets. The dopamine burst you get from healthy activities like exercise, socializing, spending time in nature, doing something creative, that's your closest ally. You can't deprive yourself of your unhealthy dopamine hits without replacing them with healthy ones. For every unhealthy behavior you get rid of, introduce a healthy source of dopamine. Find new hobbies if you need to.

This is going to speed up your recovery. Eyes on the prize.

Note: Since a surprisingly large number of you are finding it appropriate to attack me personally, as if I'm your personal therapist telling YOU what you HAVE to do to RECOVER, I find it necessary to add this caveat.

I don't care if you follow this advice, for one. Do what you want to do. My reasoning is based on my understanding of what's going on in the brains of porn addicts. Namely, desensitization. Most of the 'mindless' behaviors that I condemned in this post will not only do nothing to reverse desensitization, but may even reinforce it. Productive, healthy activities should be preferred over activities that are artificially stimulating. This does not mean you HAVE to do "monk mode", whatever that means. I'm not trying to start a cult, or turn Nofap into something it is not. I am merely reiterating the same message that Gary Wilson (who some of you that are attacking me probably exalt as the benign God of Nofap) has said numerous times, as well as what Noah Church writes about in his book on Porn Addiction. This is not something I've come up with on my own. The message to steer away from things like video games and junk food during the rebooting process has been echoed continuously ever since people started battling porn addiction. If your attachment to your avatar in Skyrim is so dear to you that you cannot let him go for 90 days to reintroduce yourself to the kinds of natural rewards that your brain was meant to enjoy, before the advent of hyper-stimulated gaming and things of that nature, nobody is holding a gun to your head to follow my advice. For those of you who were respectful and constructive in your criticism of my post, I thank you. The question of what constitutes healthy behaviors is obviously an important one to ask, and is open to interpretation. Again, my opinion is largely based on what I have read throughout the internet and from various reputable sources whose mission in sharing this information is to help you succeed, not turn you into some monk. I suggest reading Wilson's ebook on beating porn addiction, which is posted on the YBOP website. Also read Church's Wack: Addicted to Internet Porn.
